I used to describe the title character in "The Prime of Jean Brodie" as practically being the antagonist, not the protagonist of the piece. As portrayed by Maggie Smith, she is charismatic and unforgettable. Likeable? No. Monstrous, actually.
Fun villains aren't necessarily likeable but keep the action going. When my daughter and we're watching Smallville, Lex was not particularly likeable, but he was motivated and did not do nearly as much break & enter as Clark.I didn't think Clark was all that either. But the stories were fun until they got out of high school.

I need to rewatch. I saw the stage play maybe 17 years ago, but I haven't seen the Maggie Smith version since the 80s!
You can argue that Sandy, the student who brings her down, is the protagonist, with Brodie as the villain.
